Surf Expo hosts legends and innovation at 2019 January Show

Walking through the show on Thursday, I caught a glimpse and shared a smile with Gerry Lopez at the Surftech booth (#805), caught up with Kalama for a minute to talk about foils over at Alex Aguerre’s GoFoil booth (#704) and shared some epic story telling with NY surf legend John Gunderson who is writing a book on the history of surfing that we can’t wait to come out.

John Gunderson stopped by the SJ booth and kept us all enthralled with surf story and the history of the sport of kings.

That’s the thing about the Expo, it’s not just about the equipment – although that is certainly the backdrop and conversation piece at every booth – but it’s the synergy between equipment and innovator, the conversations that take place, wisdom shared and learning gleaned.  Really an extraordinary place.

Tenacious Tom Surf Expo ECS Australia
A quick stop at the ECS Australia booth with owner/king pin Ryan and team unloaded a wealth of information about ECS’s new foil design and a gorgeous look at their longboard and SUP display will keep you frothing for more water time! (Booth #412)

Stay tuned for more news and updates as we launch into Day 2 of this incredible show.  We’ll be speaking with Alex Aguerre from GoFoil on our Insta feed, celebrating the new launch of a product on Instagram LIVE at 10AM and so, so much more.

If you’re in the house, stop by!  Standup Journal is at Booth #612 at this Surf Expo!

Evelyn O'Doherty, editor & publisher of the new Standup Journal 2.0 is a former school teacher gone rogue. She left her career as a teacher in order to spend more time near or on the water after learning to surf turned her life around (upsidedown?). She is a year-round surfer and paddler living on the eastern tip of Long Island in NY who is a certified SUP instructor, seasoned SUP racer and avid longboard surfer. Evelyn was hired as Online Editor to Standup Journal in 2016. Her passion for the project quickly led to her success and eventually taking over the mag herself in Oct. 2018. Today, as editor, publisher and chief bottle washer at Standup Journal, Evelyn keeps her toes wet writing, traveling, paddling, surfing, and learning to foil. You can find her most days paddling out on Gardiner's Bay or surfing Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY.
