South Shore Paddleboards wins Sup Connect’s 2017 Sup Shop of the Year award

Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddleboards in Babylon, NY works tirelessly.  She is up at dawn to get her kids to school, drops them off and then heads to the shop where she works most days by herself to make the magic happen.

Karen opened South Shore Paddleboards about 5 years ago to calls of “You’ll never make it,” in a village that – at the time – hadn’t even heard of paddleboarding.  Single-handedly, this gal has created a community of paddlers through her presence and shop (which feels like walking in to her home) where she greets people daily by name with a hug and a smile.

Karen Marvin creates real-life magic in the world of stand up paddling

Karen’s accomplishments include completing the 24-mile SEA Paddle NYC around Manhattan on several occasions, providing paddle clinics at the shop with the likes of Chuck Patterson, Connor Baxter and Zane Sweitzer as well as holding her own event – The Race for the Great South Bay – every August to raise awareness for clean water initiatives in her surrounding waters.

Karen’s energy is non-stop.  Her smile is infectious and her stoke is REAL.  If you have paddling needs anywhere from western Suffolk to New Jersey, Karen is a quick stop away and ready to meet you in between for delivery, discussion and helping paddlers get on the water.  See her profile in our Sup Shop section here at Standup Journal online.

And if you stop by, be sure to tell her we sent ya!

Evelyn O'Doherty, editor & publisher of the new Standup Journal 2.0 is a former school teacher gone rogue. She left her career as a teacher in order to spend more time near or on the water after learning to surf turned her life around (upsidedown?). She is a year-round surfer and paddler living on the eastern tip of Long Island in NY who is a certified SUP instructor, seasoned SUP racer and avid longboard surfer. Evelyn was hired as Online Editor to Standup Journal in 2016. Her passion for the project quickly led to her success and eventually taking over the mag herself in Oct. 2018. Today, as editor, publisher and chief bottle washer at Standup Journal, Evelyn keeps her toes wet writing, traveling, paddling, surfing, and learning to foil. You can find her most days paddling out on Gardiner's Bay or surfing Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY.
