We are 34 days out from, what many consider to be the finest race of the season, the Rincon Beach Boy in Puerto Rico! A full-day event with an after party you WON’T forget.  Well, you MIGHT have a hard time remembering it after the after-party 😉 Get ready,  the 9th annual Rincon Beach Boy is on April 8, 2017 and, this year, includes a Waterman’s Lifestyle Retreat with Chuck Patterson!

Rincon Beach Boy:  Season Kick Off and a Puerto Rican Party!

Perhaps it’s the cause, raising money for children with Down Syndrome, that makes the Rincon Beach Boy so special. Perhaps it’s the iconic beauty of the Elite and Recreational race course which threads racers through the legendary surf breaks of Rincon PR including Tres Palmas, Maria’s, Indicator’s and Dome’s.  Maybe it’s the after party that goes (literally) all day and into the night featuring live music, the wickedly sinful Pirate’s Punch and an awards ceremony in which everyone is seen, cheered and congratulated.  It could be the epic location or the $10,000 awarded each year in prize money.

Whatever it is, the Rincon Beach Boy has a special magic. I’ve raced that course under extreme conditions with the waves firing off of Tres Palmas at 8-10 feet, I’ve run it when it’s perfectly glassy and been mesmerized by the reef,  I’ve been down there every year for 6 years running to make this event.  I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

It’s All about Community

The Beach Boy is significant, not only because of the iconic beauty of the race courses (8 mi Elite and a 3 mi Rec) but because of it’s community.  It is the same group of dedicated individuals who put it together every year, working tirelessly and selflessly to make this event happen.  Carson, Bobby, Hector, Tito, Sandra and countless others put their hearts into the Beach Boy for the Salon Angelitos de Amour (Angels of Love Hall) to raise money for the local children with Down’s Syndrome who need support.  It is, without a doubt, one of the most soulful events I’ve ever participated in.

A Waterman’s Lifestyle Retreat & The Rincon Beach Boy

This year before Rincon Beach Boy, for the first time, Chuck Patterson will be hosting an all-inclusive Stand Up Paddle and Yoga Retreat in Rincon the week leading up to the race.  This waterman’s (and woman’s) lifestyle retreat includes daily stand up paddle clinics on the water with Chuck, plenty of water time each afternoon with the BIG man to practice your mad skillz and yoga under the palms each evening to relax those fatigued paddling muscles.

Guests will stay at the spacious and uber comfy Villa Playa Maria, owned and operated by WNDNWVS surf shop owner, Russ Scully.  The Villa sits right on the break in front of Maria’s Beach.  You can’t get any closer to the water without stepping on the reef!  The retreat package includes 5 night’s lodging,  daily stand up paddle race clinics and instruction, afternoon water time with Chuck, equipment (Naish, Starboard and Kialoa), delicious food and yoga every day.  What could be a better pre-season warm up than a fun-filled waterman’s adventure?

Drop IN or Go for the FULL Stoke Fest

There are also one-day immersions into this retreat for people who would like to ‘drop in’ including the race clinics, lunch at the Villa, afternoon water time with Chuck and sunset yoga.

Finally, both Chuck & I will be hosting Stand Up Paddle Race Clinics at the Villa Cofresi in the days leading up to the event for anyone who would like to participate.  Clinics will include professional instruction on stroke technique, race strategies, starts and finishes, nutrition and a whole lot more.  So you can sign up for the 2-hour clinic, the day OR the full-on adventure!

She left her career as a teacher in order to spend more time near or on the water after learning to surf turned her life around (upsidedown?). She is a year-round surfer and paddler living on the eastern tip of Long Island in NY who is a certified SUP instructor, seasoned SUP racer and avid longboard surfer. Evelyn was hired as Online Editor to Standup Journal in 2016. Her passion for the project quickly led to her success and eventually taking over the mag herself in Oct. 2018. Today, as editor, publisher and chief bottle washer at Standup Journal, Evelyn keeps her toes wet writing, traveling, paddling, surfing, and learning to foil. You can find her most days paddling out on Gardiner's Bay or surfing Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY.
