Izzy Gomez (Starboard) and Kai Lenny (Naish) take the top spots yesterday at the first stop on the APP World Tour for the Sunset Beach Pro. WHAT A DAY!!!
Sunset Pro delivers
In a rush on the podium, Starboard women swept the top spots at the Sunset Beach Pro yesterday on Oahu. The day began with minimal surf and some trepidation among the contest organizers that the waves would provide a strong enough back drop for the Finals event. But, as the light began to filter in, Sunset delivered. Swell heights grew to double and triple overhead surf with steep drops and dynamic conditions making this a dramatic and exciting day to be remembered. The APP World Tour kicks off in style!
Starboard Women Sweep Podium Top Spots
After four days of competition at this iconic North Shore Wave, the women’s Starboard Team took top results and created a podium sweep for the Sunset Beach Pro, first stop on the APP World Tour, with Izzy Gomez firmly on top claiming her victory (12.5) at Sunset Beach. Right behind her and nipping at her heels all day was top seed Fiona Wylde who placed second (12.34) for the event. Fiona surely has her sights set on that World Title and the crowds will be delighted by the sportsmanship and competition between these two athletes pushing each other higher throughout the APP World Tour. Angling in at third was contender Shakira Westdorp (6.77), also a Starboard team rider. Shakira has been a ferocious presence in the women’s world sup surfing competition, taking top honors in 2016, and by the looks of it, is chomping at the bit for victory in 2017 as well. She continues to be dangerous draw in any heat. The women’s final was the sup-er charged heat of the day and we saw levels of competition rivaling the men’s in so many ways. These gals are on fire! and ready to cast their hats into the ring for a championship world tour like nothing we’ve ever seen before.
Next stop, the Maui Pro AM for the sup race competitions on March 10-12th, 2017.
Kai Awarded Perfect 10
On the men’s side, the competition was dominated in the finals by Naish boy wonder Kai Lenny (18.5). Kai’s performance included kicking out of a wave with a score of a perfect 10 within the first 10 minutes of the final. The rest of the men, including Bernd Roediger (11.8), Georgio Gomez (10.93) and Mo Freitas (10.5), wound up chasing Kai’s lead from then on. Yesterday’s magic marks Lenny’s 5th Sunset Beach Pro victory, a stunning accomplishment but in no way a surprise for the skills and sportsmanship this rider possesses.
Stay tuned as the riders head for the Maui Pro AM sup race event on March 10-12th, 2017 on the next stop of The APP World Tour.
