The weekend of 1-2 October saw 19 year old Aaron Rowe crowned as the British National Champion in Stand Up paddleboard surfing. The event was held at Watergate bay, Cornwall and was the third event in the series to find the British Champion. It is the first year that more than one event has been held to decide the Champion and Aaron only had to take part in this final event to secure the title after winning the first two rounds held in Devon and Cornwall. He did better than that and won the final round as well. Conditions for the event on the Saturday were very poor with a big messy swell and strong onshore winds, very few of the competitors were able to get outback to take the unbroken waves. After one round the competition was put on hold for the Sunday when the forecast was for good conditions.

Sunday morning saw light winds, sunshine and 4-6’ clean swell Aaron’s first round of the day saw him placed second which was enough to get him through to the 1/4 finals where he came up against the 4 time champion, Aaron won that heat with some moves that really impressed the judges and the spectators and that none of the others in the heat were doing. He advanced to the semi-final and then on to the final where again he met the 4 time champion, all the paddlers were feeling it as due to the Saturday being lost there was little time between each round to recover and fitness played a big part when paddling back out after each ride in.. Waiting for the results at the prize giving was tense as nobody was sure of the placings for the 4 finalists. In the end it was Aarons aggressive moves on the critical parts of the wave that had impressed the judges and he was crowned British Champion
