Beautiful Barbados holds a World Championship event

“This is just the beginning,” says Red Paddle Co Communications Mgr. George Shilito.  “The Red Dragon has forged a way for a completely new paddling discipline:  team racing!”

In this championship event, teams of four qualified to compete on the world’s first inflatable 22 ft. racing board, the Red Dragon, by competing in one of the sixty World Series events that swept across the globe during the 2017 Red Paddle Co racing season.

The Red Dragon racing board, even though immense in size, rolls up into a bag that is small enough to be checked onto a plane.  Gone are the hassles of airport luggage drama wherein racers are unable to transport their 12’6 or 14′ racing boards from one location to another.  Red Paddle Co has created a fun factor, stoke filled event by using their MSL Fusion inflatable technology to celebrate a board that will travel anywhere!

An event to be remembered on Carlisle Bay, Barbados

Hosted by the team at Paddle Barbados, situated in Carlisle Bay, Barbados, the Red Dragon World Championships brought together teams of racers from all over the world and representing every spectrum of paddleboard racing.

In two days of non-stop racing, teams undertook three separate challenges to claim the title of Dragon World Champions.  There was an obstacle course and a 9 kilometre downwind course as the semi finals leading up to the main event.  On that final day, as the sun dawned hot and the waters glowed a brilliant blue in Barbados, the final measure of World Champion status was a five minute sprint race around a buoy and back to the shoreline to claim the title.

Unleash the Dragon!  A World Sup Championship finale

Rounding the first buoy, it was team ‘Paddle Barbados’ (Barbados) who struck out in front, closely followed by the RED SUP Ladies (New York) and Team Pacific (Russia) less than half a board length behind. Six teams in all rounded the inside hammer buoy and navigated the surf break at Carlisle Bay.

Strength and unrelenting power from the Paddle Barbados crew charged the team to accelerate out in front of the pack, putting two board lengths between them and the fierce RED SUP Ladies from New York.  To cheers from the hometown crowd, Paddle Barbados sprinted through the finish line to claim their illustrious title and bragging rights on this inaugural event.

Paddle Barbados:  “It’s more than about the winning.”

But, it wasn’t just about the racing.  As the dusk began to settle, and racers relaxed in the shade under the swaying palms, the excitement in the air was fueled by newfound friendships, laughter and team camaraderie.  A whole new age of Sup was born in the dusk of that final day.  Team spirit and fun were the name of the game at Red Paddle Co’s first ever Dragon World Championships.
