Grain Surfboards have already made quite a name for themselves within the surf industry.  Known for the beautiful and functional wooden surfboards designed in the hand crafted method that is Grain Surfboards trademark, these boards are “hand-built using time honored woodworking techniques and local, sustainable softwoods that naturally produce artful grain patterns on every board“.  The team at Grain have an in-born itch for surfing and a natural passion for woodworking that inspires these softwood sliders that are designed to last forever.

We are Sup-er stoked to hear Mike LaVecchia and Grain’s talented crew is now taking that concept, naturally and sustainably, into the standup paddling world by offering Grain’s first Build Your own Sup workshop at their home studio in York, Maine.  This five-day standup paddleboard building class hosted at Grain will be held on April 24-28th, 2017 and led by Chesapeake Light Crafts pro instructor Geoff Kerr.  Students will have their choice of building a Chesapeake Light Crafts designed Kahalo standup paddleboard in either a 12’6” or 14 model.

Tuition is $1885, which includes all materials, instruction, tools, plus two delicious meals each day.  NO prior skill or experience is necessary.

Here’s what Mike has to say about this blast of a new class,

“Each student will build their own board from start to finish. The process used is called stitch and glue and is a proven method for building boards. The hull is made up of precision cut plywood panels which, when “stitched” together, form the hull of the board. Once the inside frames and blocking are added, students will attach a deck from Northern White Cedar, the same wood we use in all of our surfboards. This process makes a very strong, lightweight and high performing board. Students can customize boards with fabric inlays or paint, prior to adding the fiberglass lamination coat. By the end of the class, the boards are glassed and ready to take home.  As with all of our workshops, two delicious meals a day are included, as well as all tools, instruction and materials. Students also have access to our quiver of demo boards (standup and surf) for getting out on the water before and after class.”

Early AM dawn patrols are a known perk in all Grain Surfboard board-building classes.  Don’t miss the bus!

People can camp on the farm at Grain, if the weather is right, for $15 a night. There is a nice lounge, shower, kitchen and wireless access for campers. Other hotels include the Stone’s Throw right on Long Sands Beach. It’s a small motel with super clean rooms and an amazing view of the ocean. Stone’s Throw also includes a bar and restaurant on the ground floor. Other recommendations include the York Harbor Inn, the Cutty Sark and the Anchorage.

The team from Grain are considering a 2018 Build Your Sup workshop in the Amagansett, NY studio of there is enough interest. Give them a shout if you are!

Using “tomorrow’s technology and yesterday’s spirit, minimizing waste and maximizing performance,” Grain’s Build Your Own Sup workshop is sure to be an experience you wont’ forget.
