PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) –
Crews are searching for the body of a woman who drowned while paddleboarding on the Columbia River near Sauvie Island on Sunday.
Portland Fire & Rescue said they received reports of a paddleboarder who had gone under the water near Collins Beach around 4:21 p.m.
Witnesses said the woman did not have a life preserver on when she went into the water.
One man said crews were attempting to rescue the woman, but were not able to get to her in time.
“We saw a black and white cruiser boat headed out toward her, and just before they got to her she disappeared under the water,” the witness said.
The woman was identified Monday as 28-year-old Ha Khuong Vo Dang of Portland.
Although the weather is heating up, officials are reminding the public that the water in the surrounding rivers is still very cold.
Emergency crews urge water enthusiasts to wear life jackets while on the water.
