With above-average snowpack filling the river, the Yampa River Festival and Paddling Life Creek Race and Freestyle event come to Steamboat Springs May 30-31, 2014, offering a fun-filled weekend for river lovers of all walks. Designed to raise awareness for and protect the 270-mile Yampa River in northwest Colorado, the last remaining major free flowing river in the Colorado River basin, the event promises fun for the whole family, with slalom and downriver races, a kids activity zone, freestyle competition, dog events and more.

Yampa Fest 2013Positioned to accommodate pro paddlers in the region who are planning to compete at the GoPro Vail Mountain Games just after the event on June 4-8, kicking off the weekend some of the world’s best creek racers are expected to descend on town Friday, May 30, for the ninth annual, spectator friendly Paddling Life Creek Race on Class IV-V Fish Creek at 5:30 p.m. The race — sponsored by the City of Steamboat Springs, Rocky Mountain Remedies and more — offers a cash purse, prizes and more, followed by a raucous post-race party.

“It should be a great event this year, with great water flow,” says organizer Eugene Buchanan. “It promises to kick off a fun-filled weekend of events and parties for the whole Yampa River Festival, which includes SUP races, downriver races, slalom races, freestyle events and even a crazy river dog contest. Plus, it takes place during the annual Steamboat Marathon weekend, exposing Steamboat’s world-class paddling options to an even broader audience of visitors.”

Registration for the creek race is onsite at the put-in (registration closes at 4:30 pm) at a cost of $10 per racer, with registration for Yampa River Festival events at Backdoor Sports at 841 Yampa St. Friday afternoon or onsite Saturday. For the creek race, racers and spectators are advised to please park along Steamboat Blvd., not the road leading upstream to the put-in.
