Day 3 of the Alagoas Pro Grand Slam sees epic action

Day 3 of the Alagoas Pro Grand Slam sees exceptional action here at Praia do Frances, as the 1st thru 3rd rounds of women were completed, as well as the Men’s Repechage and 3rd Round: all in all a full day of action.

The first round of the women saw the performance level once again sky rocket, as the 16 athletes battled it out for their passage directly into Round 3. Stand out performances in the first round were seen by current World Ratings leader Nicole Pacelli from Brazil and Candice Appleby from the US, both posting high scores to take the wins in their respective heats.

Meanwhile in the Men’s repechage round, athletes fought to stay in the running, as just one athlete in each heat would advance through to join the rest of the athletes in Round 3. Stand outs from this round included France’s Remi Quique (F-One), Marcos Vidigal, Jefferson Comaru, James Casey (JP Australia) and the young Brazilian phenom Kainoa Texeira, winner of the Na Kama Kai Youth Challenge here at Praia do Frances.

3 Remi Alagoas Pro Grand Slam

The Repechage round saw Sophia Bartlow make it back into contention in the women’s and Round 3 of the women’s saw stand out performances from Iballa Moreno (Starboard) from the Canary Islands, Sophia Bartlow, Candice Appleby and Aline Adisaka (New Advance). We will see the women back in action again in the quarterfinals following the completion of Men’s Round #4 in the am.

Round 3 of the Men was filled with nail biting finishes and some of the most progressive and high performance Stand Up Surfing yet on the Stand Up World Tour, as Caio Vaz (Art in Surf) once again put on a clinic in heat 1, followed by impressive displays by Kody Kerbox (Naish), Sean Poynter (Starboard) and Leco Salazar (New Advance) in the first half of the Round, all scoring a heat score total of around 15 out of a possible 20, with Leco linking into one of the most beautiful looking waves of the day to win his heat and advance on.

In the second half of the Round 4, the nail biting finishes intensified, as Mo Freitas (Focus SUP) edged ahead of Benoit Carpentier (Starboard) in the dying minutes of their heat to take second and advance on behind a solid Ian Vaz (Art in Surf), while Keahi de Aboitiz (JP Australia) and Giorgiou Gomez (Starboard) provided one of the most progressive aerial exchanges to advance over an on form local, Adriano Trinca Ferro.

6 Keahi-Air Alagoas Pro Grand Slam

Justin Holland (Starboard) put on a solid performance in the penultimate heat of the Round, while Lucas Medeiros stormed to victory in the final heat and Kai Lenny (Naish) just edged through over Peru’s Tamil Martino with a final flurry of waves after an anxious 15 or so minutes of the heat.

So already a lot of excitement here at Praia do Frances, and a lot more to come, as we prepare for a full day of action tomorrow, that will kick off with Men’s Round 4 at 8am, and be followed up by the Women’s Quarterfinals at around 9.20am. We then plan to have a break until 1pm to avoid the low tide and then pick back up with the quarters thru finals of the men and semis through finals of the women for the culmination of this prestigious second stop on the 2014 Stand Up World Tour.
