OluKai Employees’ Giveback, Travel to Maui to Produce
4th Annual Ho’olaule’a, May 12-13

(MAY 9, 2012 – ORANGE COUNTY, Calif.) – OluKai’s 4th annual Ho’olaule’a (ocean celebration) kicks off this weekend in Maui, Hawaii. The 2-day event features paddling events for all abilities, including elite SUP and OC1 races. Paddlers will compete for gender equal prize money of $15,000 as they race Maui’s famous 8-mile Maliko downwind course.

Besides paddling, the festival will attract hundreds to thousands of spectators to a unique mix of cultural activities including Hawaiian games, live music and dance performances as well as sailing canoe rides – all free to the public. Headlining the entertainment on Saturday evening will be Molokai’s iconic waterman Ekolu Kalama singing and playing guitar in the outdoor setting of Kanaha Beach Park.

Preparations began several months ago as OluKai employees earned their way to Maui as part of OluKai’s ‘Ohana Giveback Program. Employees were challenged to volunteer locally a minimum of twenty hours as one of the prerequisites to travel to Hawaii and  participate in the festivities. Twelve employees completed the challenge and will be flying out this week to help prepare and produce the ocean celebration.

On Monday, the OluKai employees and local volunteers will travel together to Honokowai Valley, a cultural heritage preservation site, and spend the day on reforestation and archeological stabilization projects with our ‘Ohana Giveback partner Maui Cultural Lands.
