STEPHEN WHITESELL Keahi de Aboitiz, Marshall Islands

WHITESELL  “Early last year in March, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to go on a trip with the guys at Cabrinha to the Marshall Islands as part of their promotional shoot for 2012. Although we didn’t score pumping conditions the whole time, it’s fair to say we still got the goods. The place is amazing, and we were lucky enough to get a few good days for both kiting and surfing. The breaks there are world-class, and I have to say it’s the clearest water I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s so clear that it actually freaks you out looking at the depth of the water. Even when it’s fairly deep, it still looks like there is only a couple feet of water underneath you.
“That being said, this wave in particular is already shallow enough that it ends up looking pretty much dry. It’s a pretty insane wave, and you can see where it gets its name from. ‘Maybes’ describes it pretty well because it’s pretty much like, maybe this one will run off and close out and maybe it won’t. It comes straight out of deep water, and because there is no pass in a reef, it runs off extremely fast and hollow at an angle down the reef. I was lucky enough to find a couple makeable, and they have to be some of the best barrels of my life. It’s pretty fair to say we scored, and this goes down as a trip of a lifetime for me.”                              -Keahi De Aboitiz

Upon hearing he’d made the Photo Annual, our longtime Wind Tracks windsurfing mag publishing days buddy Whitez replied, “Siiiiick!!! Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while. Haha!” But Stephen is being too modest as usual. Here he has captured one of the most stunning sup images to date! A shot not even the luckiest “blind squirrel” could even dream of scoring.  -Clay
